1947 Obituary Parowan, Iron, Utah Iron County Matron Dies of Car Crash Injuries Parowan, Iron County Iron county's 1947 highway fatality toll stood at two Tuesday--the same as last year at this time--following the death Monday at 3 pm of Mar Mary Jane Whitney Adams Mitchell, 72, who was injured in a highway accident 20 miles north of here April 3. Still hospitalized from the same accident are the victim's husband, William C Mitchell, prominent Parowan churchman, and her stepson, J Harold Mitchell, 50, Safford, Ariz., president of to Graham stake, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The fatal accident occurred when the car in which the Mitchell family was en route to Salt Lake City to attend the annual LDS conference sessions collided with a large transport truck on highway 91. Mrs Mitchell was born at Parowan March 29, 1875, a daughter of [New] and Sarah Gurr Whitney. Her father was said to be the first white child born in Iron county after it was founded in 1851. She was married to Charles D Adams of Parowan, who died 15 years age. She was married to Mr Mithell in the Salt Lake LDS temple in January, 1939. An active church worker all her life, she also had been president of the county DUP chapter. She is survived by her husband, 11 sons and daughters, Mrs Sara A Mitchell, Claude and Homer Adams of Parowan; Mrs Claribel A Griffith, Mrs Imogene A Timmons, Mrs Lynette A Chilton and Mrs Hazel Skinner, all of Salt Lake City; Orlando W Adams, Ogden; Mrs Lucille A Switzer, Burbank, Cal.; Mrs Afton A Robinson and Woodrow Adams, Los Angeles; six brother and sisters, Mrs Mabel Hanks, Salt Lake City; Samuel J and William Whitney, Mrs Bertha Mitchell, Mrs Eva Bennett and Mrs Minnie Lowder, all of Parowan. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Parowan City cemetery. Utah, Salt Lake Telegram, April 15, 1947, Page 8.
