About Mary Clara Ahlfors

Mary Clara Gersich was the first born child of Matt Gersich and Mary Terhlen. She was named after her mother and the name Clara came from a little girl that her mother cared for in Ljubljana,Slovenia.

She attended the public school in Chisholm, Minnesota and went on to business college.

The first of the Gersich girls to marry, she wed Otto Ahlfors on May 30,1922 in St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Chisholm, Minnesota.

Her daughter, Margaret, and son Richard, were born in the Gersich home at 322 1st Street SW, Chisholm, MN. Her mother, an accomplished midwife, attended to her daughter.

After the death of her father Matt in 1954, Mary returned home to be with her mother. A bookkeeper, she worked at the bank in Chisholm and was no doubt the source of the two dollar bills given to her nieces and nephews by her mother.

Mary enjoyed music, astronomy and sports on the TV. She was an accomplished crotcheter and made many heirloom bedspreads treasured by her relatives.

It was while Mary was visiting her daughter Margaret and family in West Saint Paul that she passed away in her sleep on 18 November,1975.

She is buried in Evelyth, Minnesota beside her beloved Otto.
