In 1635, Derrick Albertson's father, Nicholas Albertson an d his brother William, emigrated to the Colonies from the Netherlands (Steenwijk, Steenwijkerland Municipality, Overijssel). William settled on Long Island and was married by 1643. Nicholas settled in Bristol, Massachusetts and married in 1636. A son, Nicholas Jr. was born in 1636 (died in childhood), Derrick in 1637 (married Wilmett), William in 1639 (married Esther), and Albert in 1642 (married Eva in 1658). Their father Nicholas died in 1642 in North Carolina, and his brother (the childrens' uncle) William took over, remaining close to them until he died in 1655. There is not much known about Derrick's mother.

Perquimans County, located in the Coastal Plain region of North Carolina, was formed in 1679 and originally called Berkeley Precinct of Albemarle County; it was later renamed for the Perquimans Indians of the area. It is partially bordered by the Albemarle Sound. The Weapemeoc as well as Perquimans Indians were early inhabitants of the county, followed by English and Welsh settlers.
