Mary Allen

Mary Allen, daughter of Thomas and Sarah Wright of Guilford, CT, married Gideon Allen in about 1698 (see profile of Gideon Allen, of Compo).

It appears that Gideon abandoned Mary in about 1702 or shortly later. Although Gideon married Phebe Bennett, widow of John Bennett, in Fairfield, CT, in about 1713, there was a list of the land in Guilford of Mary Wright alias Mary Allin on 16 Mar 1719[/20?] (Guilford, New Haven Co. CT, Deeds, Terrier, v. 2, 1686-1747, Family History Library, film 0004350, item 2, p. 27). This proves that Mary was still alive when Gideon married his second wife.

Between about 1729 and 1731, Mary's sons Gideon, Joseph and Ebenezer were very active in the Guilford land records and deeds, with 22 records (Guilford, New Haven Co. CT, Proprietors Records, v. Large [lg], 1703-1817, 4th & 5th divisions; and Guilford, New Haven Co. CT, Deeds, v. 4, 1728-1730, Family History Library, film 0004333, item 1). Some of the records show that the land was "by descent from his mother Mary dau. of Thos Wright dec'd". All of the action in land within about 2-3 years suggests that Mary had recently died, probably about 1728-1729 or just before.
