About Mary Ann Allan

The late Mrs James Allan, who passed away on Wednesday morning, was one of the. pioneer settlers of Taranaki. She arrived with her parents Mr and Mrs Jordan — and other members of the family by the 'ship Timandra, 382 tons, Captain James Skinner, on 24th February, ,1842. Mrs Allan could therefore *claim to be one of the founders of .New Plymouth, and had passed through all the trials and hardships accompanying such. The name Jordan is a French name, the family, with other Huguenot refugees, having settled in Dorset in the 17th century, I and there established a silk-weaving industry. Other descendents of these Huguenots Came to New Zealand at I the same time in the Timandra, and settled in Taranaki. Her late husband who predeceased her about three years, also came by the Timandra, and was attached to one of the Plymouth Company's survey 'parties?
