About Mary Ann Wilson

Mary Ann arrived in New Zealand sometime at the end of 1881, and then married James Wilson in January 1882.

She and James lived in the Duffers Creek, Half Ounce area near Totora Flat, West Coast, N.Z. and went on to have 9 children between 1882 and 1904

Last on the West Coast Electoral Roll in 1911.

Sometime between 1911 and 1914 Mary Ann left her husband James for another man (Robert Crawford) and headed to Rotorua. Jess the youngest, was put into a boarding school in Greymouth and looked after by the Nuns. Mary Ann took the next 2 youngest children, Charles and Sheila with her.

Sheila was to succumb to illness and died in 1914. She is buried in Rotorua Cemetery.

From there Mary Ann and Robert moved to Taumarunui.

James, Mary Ann's husband died in Dec 1917, but there is no evidence of a marriage between Mary Ann and Robert Crawford. Robert was a widow with 2 children. He was formerly from Blackball and was the sole proprietor of the Royal Mail Line of coaches running between Blackball and Ngahere. He died in 1934 in Taumarunui.

On Mary Ann's death certificate, it states that she was married at 16. This information was given by Robert Crawford and we believe it to be true. On her marriage Certificate it says 18.

On her marriage certificate it also states that that her mother was Jane Elizabeth Whiteman. This is not possible because of her age. It is believed that Jane more than likely brought her up, but she was born to Charles Walker and Louisa Coombes. Have yet to discover what became of Louisa.
