About Mary Baldwin

Mary Bruen, wife of John Baldwin of Milford, CT

Donald Lines Jacobus (see citation below) demonstrated conclusively that Mary Bruen was the daughter of Obadiah Bruen and Sara(h) ____ (? Seeley). There has been a controversy as to whether Mary Bruen was the sister of Obadiah or the daughter of Obadiah. Obadiah's father, John Bruen of Stapleford did have a daughter, Mary, baptized 14 July 1622, who died young. The date of the baptisim was supplied by the Vicar of Tarvin. Obadiah's brother, John Bruen, states definitely that of his his father's children from his third marriage, two died young and only Joseph survived. This statement according to Jacobus "...effectively disbars the claim that the wife of John Baldwin, Sr., was this Mary [child of John Bruen and his third wife]..." In addition, he notes that Mary Bruen named her children Obadiah and Sarah after her parents. And finally, Mary Bruen is said in her marriage record to be of Pequot [New London], which fits with her being the daughter of Obadiah Bruen and Sarah ___ of New London!

Mary Bruen, baptized at St. Julians, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England, 12 June 1634, died at Milford, 2 Sept. 1670, daughter of Obadiah and Sarah ( ) Bruen. See Donald Lines Jacobs and also Ancestry and descendants of Frederick Tracy Camp & his wife Marion Fee John F. Camp, Nathan Grier Parke. J.F. Camp, 1961.
