disputed origins

From The William and Mary Quarterly, Volume 23. page 178

... of the same family as Robert Cary, Lord Hunsdon. In his will Bassett mentions his nephew, Joseph Foster, and this nephew settled in New Kent County, became captain, colonel, &c, and his descendants were leading citizens. And Bassett's sister, Mary Scott, was probably mother of Col. John Scott, of the same county. Thus there were ties of relationships between the Lydalls, Bacons, Bassetts, Carys, Honiwoods, Fosters, Woodwards, &c.

In Old New Kent County, by Dr. Malcolm Harris, I show: Mary Bassett, daughter of Mary Bassett and James Bassett, MP, married Joseph Foster of Southampton. Mary Bassett was sister of Capt. William Bassett of Eltham and she was living at Foster's Castle in 1671.

"If James and Mary Bassett had had a daughter Mary she would have had to have been born between 1555 and 1558 when Mary died. I believe the dates for the Joseph Foster II who is said to have married Mary are around 1655-1715. This means that Mary would have been over ninety years of age when her future husband was born!"

"Col. John SCOTT and Mary BASSETT, (d/o William BASSETT and Bridget CAREY) [SIC] were the great great grandparents of William Henry HARRISON 9th President of the United States."

The following note suggests that the mother of Mary Bassett (wife of Col. John Scott) was Bridget Carey (or Cary) and that Mary's reported parents William Bassett and Bridget Carey were the great great grandparents of President William Henry Harrison. Her brother William then would have been the future president's great grandfather.

However, since William Bassett was born in 1630 and his wife Bridget Carey was born in 1652, they could not have been Mary Bassett's parents since Mary was born in 1634. Instead, William Bassett and his wife Bridget Cary was her brother and sister-in-law.

A different William Bassett (born 1604), and Anne Dickeson (or Dickerson) were the parents of both Mary and the William Basset (born 1632 and married to Bridget Cary). Thus, William Bassett (born 1604) and Anne Dickeson were the great great great grandparents of President William Henry Harrison through their son William (born 1632).

There are a lot of family trees on the internet that reflects this error, although some do have it correct.
