Mary Artimissa (McElvain) Brown was born in 1790 in Franklin County, Virginia, United States. Her parents were Thomas McElwain and Frances (Price) McElwain.

Mary married Nathaniel B. Brown, of Muhlenberg County on November 27, 1812 in Franklin County, Virginia, United States.

Together they had the following children: Robert Brown; Mary Artimissa Brown; Hudson Brown; James Francis Brown; Lucy Jane (Brown) Vincent; Sarah Ann Brown; William Thompson Brown; John Hudson Brown; Phebe Brown; Nathaniel Owen Brown; Thomas Brown; Samuel W Brown; Julia Ann (Brown) Highley.

She died in 1850 in Cypress Creek, Muhlenberg County, Kentucky, United States.
