Mary was a Southern Ute woman (Mouache or Caputa band)

The Southern Ute Indian Reservation is an Indian reservation in southwestern Colorado, United States, near the northern New Mexico state line. Its territory consists of land from three counties; in descending order of surface area, they are La Plata, Archuleta, and Montezuma Counties. Today, the Mouache and Caputa bands comprise the Southern Ute Tribe, known as "Keepers of the River" and are headquartered in Ignacio, Colorado.

Biography:
Mary was born to Julian Buck and an unknown partner in 1881 probably on the Southern Ute Reservation in southwestern Colorado. Her father appears to have died before June 30, 1905, as he is not in the Indians Census for that year and Mary shows up as a ward of her grandmother Pahose 'Sarah' Buck.

Mary was admitted to the Canton Asylum for Insane Indians on September 9, 1918, and died there only three months later on December 14, 1918. Mary is reported to have died of starvation and constipation according to asylum records according to "Vanished in Hiawatha" by Carla Joinson

Mary was buried in the Hiawatha Asylum Cemetery, tier 6, plot 31, according to a letter written by Dr. L.L. Culp to the commissioner of Indian Affairs following the closing of the asylum in December 1933.

Her profile is part of the The Canton Asylum One Place Study.

Research Notes:
-Mary Buck does not show up in Canton Asylum census reports, probably because she arrived in 1918 after the annual report in June and died before the next annual report in June 1919.
-based on Indian census Rolls her grandmother died between 1907 and 1910, which means that she was admitted to Canton by the Southern Ute Agency.
