About Mary Josephine Capone
Per the book Uncle Al Capone by Deidre Capone, Al Capone's niece, Mae Coughlin was not the biological mother of Albert "Sonny" Capone. His biological mother died while giving birth to him. Theresa Capone (Al's mother) wanted Sonny to have a mother and even though the 20th century was well under way, arranged marriages were still perfectly common. She found a devout Irish Catholic woman, Mary (Mae) Coughlin, in her parish who was 20 years old, nearing spinsterhood iin se days. Mae was sterile due to a birth defect, and so when Theresa pleaded with her to marry Al and raise his son as herown, she agreed. She would be a devoted mother to Sonny and wife to Al for the rest of her life.
