James Carter, son of Gregory Carter (1550-1607) and Alice Cordy (1555-1606), married Judith Richardson (1587-1612) in Hinderclay, Suffolk, England, in 1602. They had seven children: James (1603-1655; baptized 25 Mar 1606?); Mary 1605-1655; Thomas (1607-1607); Thomas Hawthorne (1608-1684; baptized 3 Jul 1608); Edward (1608?-?); Margaret (1608?-?); Judith (1612-?).
