Mary was the youngest child of Toney A. and Mabel Ross Hardy. She married Sherman B. (Bill) Cawley in 1948 and had two sons Sherman II (b. 1950) and John Cawley (b. 1951).

She moved with her family to Tucson, AZ. in 1936 when she was 14 years old. She attended Tucson H.S. In 1939 she enrolled into the University of Arizona and the Gamma Zeta Chapter of the Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority. As a Kappa, she was honored with the Marion Belton Loyalty Award in 1991.

For many years she traveled back and forth between AZ. and NY where she spent a lot of time hiking in the Adirondacks. It was after graduation while hiking in these mountains in 1945 that she met her future husband Sherman B. (Bill) Cawley a returning veteran and Harvard graduate. They were married in 1948 at the historic Saranac Inn and in 1949 moved to Tucson, AZ.

Mary spent her career as a teacher and administrator in the Tucson Unified School District. She started as an elementary school teacher, advanced to the Headstart and Helping Teacher Programs, and eventually become the Director of the Follow Through Program for the District.

After the unexpected death of her husband in 1981, Mary retired to the Foothills of the Catalina Mountains and entered a new phase of her life traveling the world. She spent the next 25 years traveling on every continent including Antarctica. She enjoyed everyday of her life and encouraged others to do the same.

In her later years she relocated to Green Valley and followed her love of the desert to become a member of the Santa Cruz County Cowbelles, a group of women maintaining ranching traditions and values in Southern Arizona.

At this writing she still has a living brother John V. Hardy (1916).

Mary was a sister to John Van Hardy (Vero Beach, FL.) and survived her two sisters, Margaret H. Canning and Frances H. Feezer. She is also survived by her sons and daughters-in-laws, Sherman II (Billie Anne) Cawley of Phoenix and John Hardy (Vesta) Cawley of Tucson, and is the proud grandmother of Major Shawn Beltran of Escondido, CA., Graham D. Cawley of Boulder, CO, and Andrew C. Cawley of Scottsdale, AZ.
