Per 1870 U.S. Federal census Mary Chaffee is living in San Buenaventura, Santa Barbara, California, born abt 1867 California Daughter [in the household of parents Walter Scott and Rebecca (Nidever) Chaffee]

According to the Historical and Biographical Record of Southern California, by J. M. Guinn, published Chapman Publishers Co., Chicago, IL, 1902, page 842, written about Walter and Rebecca's family: "there were 9 children born, but only 8 survived." [NOTE: Walter and Rebecca lost 2 children, Mary and Wallace Lemuel Chaffee]

From the History of Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo & Ventura Counties, by Mrs. Yda Addis Storke, 1891 Lewis Publishing, Chicago, IL, pg. 484 states: "and of their nine children all are living save one". (Mary Chaffee or Wallace Lemuel Chaffee could be the child who they are referring to)

Per 1880 U.S. Federal census, there is no Mary Chaffee living in household of Walter and Rebecca Chaffee.

There is no record of her death with City of Ventura [Old Ventura City Burial Records for St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery] so there is a possibility the Mary may have been buried on Walter's rancho in San Buenaventura, St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery or at Mission San Buenaventura Cemetery - twc 2007
