About Mary Ann Coate

The 1790 census of the United States shows a number of Haskett’s in North Carolina as follows:

Periquinas County Thomas Joseph John Jessee Silas, Jr. Joshua Alice

Alice was probably a widow, because she was listed as the head of a family, with one female over 16, Mary Haskett (who married Herbert Hoover’s great great grandfather, and was therefore his great great grandmother. She was the daughter of Isaac Haskett, who is not listed in the 1790 census, so probably he died and Alice was his widow and mother of Mary as well as some of the other names listed.

Mary was married in 1793. She named her son Jessee. There was a Jessee Haskett listed in the census so it seems possible that she had a brother named Jessee. Our first known was Joel Haskett, born around 1750 in North Carolina. There is a Joseph listed in the 1790 census but no Joel, so there may have been a mistake about the name. Whether Joel or Joseph, his son John came to Indiana with his family in 1824, accompanied by his father.

They settled in Owen County, not far from where Terre Haute is located. John Haskett built a log cabin there. George Haskett, grandfather of our family came from Terr Haute, so we can assume that he was a descendant of Joel and John in the family tree. The one who seems to be the right one is listed as Ephriam. However, mistakes in names are often found in genealogies so we can be safe in assuming that George and Ephriam are the same person. George Haskett (or Ephriam) died in 1879 at the age of 32, therefore was born in 1847. Ephriam Haskett, his father was born in 1824 and died in1849. He married Sarah Gross. They had three sons, two of whom died in the civil war. The remaining son George or Ephriam was married and had one son whose name is given as Fred. (the person writing the family tree seems hazy on the names because all the dates check and this Ephriam was the only one who could have been the father of George Haskett, who died in 1879. the other sons were too young and married later. Also, a photograph in the Gross genealogy of Thomas Gross, who was the grandfather of Sarah Gross, bears a very strong resemblance of our George Haskett (born 1878).
