Sources: 1.New England Historical and Genealogical Register, October 1993, Whole Number 588, page 333-351. The identification of Susannah's mother, Mary Martin, as a Coggeshall is based on evidence in her husband's will. Joseph Martin names his wife Mary as the aunt of Daniel Coggeshall, executor of the estate. Witnesses to the Will included John Coggeshall, son of John Coggeshall, deceased, Jonathan Nichols, and John Anthony. Martin left sixty acres of lands in Portsmouth to his grandson, William James. This land was bounded east on the highway, south partly on land of Thomas Cornell and partly by land belonging to the Quakers, west partially by land belonging to Daniel Vaughn, lately deceased, and partly by land of Joshua Coggeshall, and partly by land of Thomas Nichols, and north by land of John Cory. This appears to be the same land he had originally deeded to William and Susannah James in 1696 for "love and affection." Nancy Martin was almost certainly the daughter of John Coggeshall, who was listed as an immigrant to New England with a William James, not yet identified, in June 1632. Coggeshall and his wife Mary had a daughter Mary baptized at Castle Headingham, Kent, June 22, 1628, who was mentioned in her grandmother's will as wife of Joseph Martin, died September 1706, "age 80," indicating a birthdate of about 1626. She and her husband are buried in Coddington Burial Ground. In his will dated June 8, 1704, Joseph Martin named among others his daughter Susannah Kelley. Administration on the estate of Joseph Calley "late of Newport, deceased, with no will appearing," was granted to his widow Susannah on April 10, 1704, she having presented an inventory of his estate and procured bonds. One other record lists Joseph Calley, signed by mark JC, as a witness, along with Daniel Vernon, to a bill of sale from Isaac Martindale of Newport, merchant, and Godsgift his wife, to John Painer, May 25, 1698, and from John Paine and Mary his wife to Isaac Martindale, May 30, 1698. 2.
