Mary Clapham was the daughter of Charles Clapham and his second wife Ann Burnhill. Mary was born 1769 in Yorkshire England. Mary's parents were married on June 4th 1776 in the Church of St Peter, Leeds, England. On Xmas day, December 25 1793, Mary gave birth to a baby boy, in Welton, Yorkshire, England. The child was named Joseph, and was Christened Feb 16 1794 in the Church of England, Cherry Burton Parish, in Yorkshire England.
Church records reveal that a man by the name of Joseph Windass paid Charles Clapham compensation for the care of the "Clapham Child". This Information provides at least a reasonable assumption that Joseph Windass was indeed the natural father of Joseph Clapham. In addition, Mary's brother, George Clapham, married Martha Windass, Suggesting that the families were known to each other.
