About Mary Jane Cook, Free Settler “Drummore” 1831
Mary Jane was the first woman to come before the Criminal Court in January 1832 on charges of stealing from her master William Tanner. Jeremiah died within a few months of their arrival, thus Tanners then employed several of the Cook children, (Jane being one of them). Mary Cook was quite desperate and found herself to be to first woman to ever come before the court of WA. Her crime was to steal, 4 quarts of wine and 2 pounds of butter, value of 11 shillings. Her punishment was 6 lashes and one month imprisonment with hard labour. She was imprisoned in the Round House at Fremantle.
Later, she married Henry Randall in Fremantle WA on the 26/8/1832.He was born in the UK c1773 and died in WA c1847
