Two Mary Thompsons in New Haven
Mary Thompson born in New Haven in 1642, daughter of John and Dorothy Thompson has been merged and confused with Mary Thompson also born in New Haven but in 1652 and daughter of John and Ellen Harrison Thompson. Since both women’s father’s name is John, the best way to distinguish them is by their husband’s name. Mary Thompson (1642) married John Cooper, Jr. Mary Thompson (1652) married Samuel Lines. Families of Ancient New Haven, Vol. VII by Donald Lines Jacobus, pages 1749-1751, explains the different Thompson families living in New Haven at the same time. “There were three early families of the name (THOMPSON): the brothers William, John and Anthony, of whom William d s. p. 24 April 1683; for John and Anthony see FAM. 1 and FAM. 2: John of East Haven see FAM. 3” Families 1 & 3 are explained as follows:
Family 1. John Thompson, brother of William and Anthony, died December 1674 in New Haven. He married on 25 February 1650 in New Haven Ellen Harrison, daughter of Richard Harrison. The following are their children.
- 1. Mary, born 24 April 1652 in New Haven. Baptized 17 September 1654 in New Haven. Married (1) November 1674 New Haven Samuel Lines. Married (2) John Hitchcock; married (3) 18April 1717 in New Haven Samuel Clark.
- 2. Anne or Hannah 1654, New Haven.
- 3. Elizabeth 1657, New Haven.
- 4. Lydia 1663, New Haven.
- 5. Sarah 1667, New Haven.
Family 3. John Thompson, died 1656; resident of East Haven, married Dorothy____; and she married 2nd, Thomas Harrison. The following are their children.
- 1. Hannah, died 1712.
- 2. John, died 1692. 3. Mary, died November 1714; married 27 December in New Haven John Cooper.
- 4. Joseph, died 1703.

Biography
This Mary Thompson, the daughter of John and Dorothy Thompson, died in November 1714. On December 27, 1666 she married John Cooper.[1]
Jacobus does not indicate her birth date, but Find A Grave (Memorial # 28272072) gives 1642 as her year of birth.
