About Mary Emma Cottle

Mary Emma went by the name Emma. She was born June 2, 1895 in Shallotte, Brunswick Co., North Carolina to Daniel Whitfield Reynolds and Sophia White. She was raised in Brunswick County. Her mother died when she was eleven years old. Her father remarried less than two years later. Emma married three times. Her first marriage was to Fred Gurley Stephens on April 6, 1912. Emma was only 16 when she married. They had two children. Janie Lee was born May 26, 1915. Robert died as an infant. Her second marriage was to Isaac Melton Ray in 1917. She and Isaac had five boys. Emma took in washing and ironing to help the family out. She raised her children to be hard working and to stay out of trouble. She later worked at the cotton mill. Isaac Melton passed away in 1937 and she then married George Robert Cottle. Her son, William, died in 1941 at the age of 17 in an automobile accident while delivering the Lumberton newspaper.
