About Mary Ann Crocker

Deming, New Mexico is named after Mary Ann Deming Crocker, wife of Charles Crocker. A golden spike was driven at Deming in 1881 to commemorate the meeting of the Southern Pacific with the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe railroads, completing the construction of the second transcontinental railroad in the United States.

Charles and Mary Ann (Deming) Crocker are buried at a mausoleum at Millionaire's Row, Mountain View Cemetery, Oakland, Alameda County, California.

Mary Ann Deming was born in 1827, the daughter of a saw-mill owner in Mishawaka, Marshall County, Indiana. In 1852 she ventured westward to California with her new husband, Charles Crocker, and together they opened a general store in Sacramento. Later, her husband became one of the "Big Four" involved in the creation of the Pacific Railroad.

Upon her death on November 4th, 1889 her four surviving children, Harriet, William, George, and Frederick, set up a Trust in honor of the charitable work to which she was devoted. The present Trustees and Associates of the Mary A. Crocker Trust are all descendants of this courageous and spirited pioneer.
