About Mary Dole (Wiley) Peary
Another source says Mary was born in Stow, Maine in 1827. Charles Pearly came to Stow and took over the Abbott mill at Stow Corner from his uncle Eben Nutter. In 1849 he purchase land adjacent to the mill and built a house there. In 1852 he and Mary went with the Nutters to Cambria County, Pennsylvania, where Charles worked in Nutter's shook business. Three years after Robert's birth, Charles Peary died, and his wife and son soon returned to Maine and lived in Portland, where Robert attended elementary and high school. When Robert went to Bowdoin College, his mother went with him and lived in Brunswick. After he graduated from college in 1877, Robert and his mother lived for two years near her relatives in Fryeburg Village until 1879, when he obtained a position at the U.S. Coast & Geodetic Survey in Washington, DC. Mary later moved to Cape Elizabeth and died at the home of her cousin, Eliza Evans, in South Portland.
