About Mary Elke
Mary Nurminiemi, daughter of Emanuel and Greeta Nurminiemi, was born at Haapavesi Oulun Lanni, Finland, on April 10, 1875. Here she received her schooling and was confirmed in the Lutheran faith and grew to womanhood. She was married to Leo Elkie on April 23, 1898, and in 1900 with their infant daughter Lempi, they emigrated to America and for six years they lived at Calumet, Mich., where Mr. Elkie worked in the copper mines. They then moved to North Dakota and lived at Wilton and Arena until 1919 when they came to Menahga, Minn. In 1925 they moved to Brandon, Urness, township, which has been their home for the past 19 years.
Mrs. Elkie passed away on Wednesday morning at 10:30, April 5, 1944, at her home, being at the time of her death 68 years, 11 months and 25 days. Besides her husband she leaves to mourn her loss eight daughters and one son: Mrs. Lempi Koskela of Brandon; Hilda, Mrs. John Sacarias, of Berkeley, Calif.; Lizzie, Mrs. Charley A. Sakkinen, of Menahga; Helmie, Mrs, Emanuel Lidberg, of Aitkin, Minn.; Hulda, Mrs. Walter Josephson, of Duluth; Hazel, Mrs Edwin Kvitek, of Lowry; Hilma at home; Tina, Mrs. Orin Enberg, of Duluth, and Pfc. Leo A. Elkie of Indiantown Gap, Pa. Her daughter Lilly preceded her in death.
Funeral services were held Sunday, April 9, at 1 o'clock p.m. at the house and 2 o'clock at the Apostolic Lutheran church of Moe township. The burial was made in the church cemetery, with Rev. John Pollari of Maple, Wis., officiating. Pallbearers were Isaac Lehto, Wm. Sarvie, John Johnson, Chas. Kusisto, Andrew Hulkonen and Herman Josephson. All the children were present at the funeral except Mrs. J. Sacarias of Berkeley, Calif. (Park Region Echo, April 13, 1944)
