About Mary Garret alias Bouchier

Mary Browne was baptized at Saffron Walden, Essex, England on 27 September 1607, daughter of Godfrey and Elizabeth (More) Browne. She died probably in Massachusetts after 1 August 1668 (husband’s probate).

Mary (Browne) (Oakley) Bouchier alias Garret married twice.

Her first husband was Miles Oakley (Awkley), married in Saffron Walden on 5 October 1634. Their children were:

  1. Elizabeth Oakley, born in or near Saffron Walden, Essex, England abt 1635. Died in Massachusetts between 18 October 1669 and 1 January 1672/3. Married Edmund Brown (Edmond Browne) at Boston on 15 February 1653/4. He was bp Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire, 4 May 1600, died in Surinam abt 29 September 1665, son of Edmund and Mary (Cramphorne) Browne.
  2. Miles Oakley, born 1 or 2 April 1638, bp at Saffron Walden 8 April 1638. Died before Nov 1682 at Westchester, Westchester Co., NY. Married by 1669 (child born in Dec. 1669) to Mary, daughter of Bridget, later wife of Edward Waters, married 1) Miles Oakley (d 1682). Married 2) by 2 Dec 1686 to John Cromwell. Married 3) by 7 December 1692 to Abraham Brown, who had married again to Hannah.

Miles Oakley died, likely in Massachusetts, between 8 August 1638 and about 1642.

Mary Browne, widow of Miles Oakley, married 2nd to Robert Garret alias Bouchier by say 1642 (child born at Boston on 2 June 1643). He died between 27 November 1660 (Will) and 1 August 1668 (probate).

His children named in his will:

  1. John Garret was born at Boston on 2 June 1643
  2. Robert Garret
  3. Mary Garret
  4. Sarah Garrett

Unless Robert Garret had an earlier wife called Mary, it does not seem chronologically possible for Capt. Thomas Oakley to be the son of Miles Oakley, III and Mary Garret alias Bouchier.

Edmund Browne, shipmaster, died without issue (2 children died young). However his wife Elizabeth Oakley was a widow with children from a previous marriage. [NO]
