About Mary Gilbert

Dorothy and Thomas Durham. Dorothy and Thomas Durham also received from Mary (Smoot) Gilbert a gift of deed of 50 acres which adjoined the land given by William Smoot. The recording of the deed is listed: "At a court held for Richmond County the third day of September 1707 ... this day Mary Gilbert acknowledged a deed for land to Thomas Durham which is ordered to be recorded. This day WILLIAM SMOOT acknowledged a release of his right and title of a parcell of land sold by Mary GILBERT to Thomas DURHAM, and on motion of said Thomas the same is ordered to be recorded” [5]

The relationship between William Smoot and Dorothy Durham and Mary Gilbert is unknown but William's release of his right to land sold by Mary Gilbert does indicate some type of family relationship that needs further research.

Dorothy, wife of Thomas Durham and mother of his three youngest children, was the daughter of Mary (Smoot) Gilbert, youngest sister of William Smoot. This relationship is based on speculation as there is no documented proof of this relationship.

It was often speculated that Dorothy was a daughter of William Smoot Jr., who was actually Dorothy's maternal uncle. William Smoot Jr. conveyed property to Dorothy Durham in 1700 "with love and affection." Based on the various records there does appear to be a family relationship of some type. The relationship between Dorothy and William Smoot is based on speculation as there is no documented proof of the relationship.

Various records prove that Dorothy Durham, Thomazin Goodridge, and Alice Chinn were all sisters[11] However, the women are only recorded by their married names. The maiden name has not been proved.[12]

There are no Documents which prove that Mary, wife of James Gilbert was a Smoot and there are no documents which prove she was the mother of Dorothy Durham, or Dorothy's sisters, Alice and Thomasin. There was a family relationship of some type but there are no Documents which prove what the relationship was. See: https://dna-explained.com/2017/06/25/dorothy-durhams-parents-and-th...
