Greenup, Mary Catherine Pope (1752?-1807). Daughter of Nathaniel Pope of Virginia, she was the wife of Christopher Greenup, congressman from Kentucky 1792-1798. Dolley would have met Mary Greenup in Philadelphia. Christopher Greenup was governor of Kentucky (1804-1808). He supported James for president in 1808. The couple had one son, Christopher Greenup.

Gov. Christopher Greenup, who served from 1804-1808, held the first inaugural ball for his wife, Mary Catherine Pope Greenup. She died in 1807, and according to legend, her ghost walks the halls at night carrying a candle, Collins said.


Mary Catherine Pope, fourth daughter of Nathaniel, IV (1729-1806) and Lucy Anne Smith Fox Pope (1732-89), was born in 1765, in Louisa County, Va. She married in 1787, in Richmond, Va., Governor Christopher Greenup (1750-1818), of Loudoun County, Va. During the Revolution, he was a first lieutenant in the Continental Line, 1777-78, and later a colonel in the Virginia militia. He was an attorney, judge, a first Member of Congress from Kentucky, 1792-97, third governor of Kentucky, 1804-08, and in whose honor Greenup County, Ky. was named. She was the first First Lady to be honored with a ball prior to the governor's inauguration. The ball took place on August 28, 1804, at Wiesinger's in Frankfort. She died while her husband was governor. The Greenup mansion was one of the show places in Danville, Ky. Their seven children were Nancy Peyton (1793-1870), Wilson Pope (c1794-1821), Susan Pope (c1793-post1830), Charlotte V.C. (c1801-), Lucetta Pope (d.unm.), Christopher, Jr. (c1800-) who was a newspaper editor in Tallahassee, and Eliza Greenup.

Susan Pope Greenup (c1793-post1830) married in 1811, Craven P. Luckett who represented Jefferson County, Ky. in the legislature, 1821-22.  They lived in Louisville, Ky.  Their five children were Catherine (d.yng.); Peter Ogden (d.yng.); Anne Eliza; Mary Anne who married (1) Dupres, and (2) Capt. Coulton; and Christopher G. Luckett.  

Mary Catherine Pope died October 22, 1807, and was probably buried in Belleview Cemetery, Frankfort. Her husband, Governor Greenup, died April 27, 1818, and is buried in Frankfort Cemetery.
