About Mary Ann Hart

Mary Ann's birth name is unknown. US census information confirms that she was born in England. DOB is calculated from her date of death minus the age given in years, months and days. She is said to be Eli's wife on census records, but as yet, no evidence has been found of marriage to Eli. They migrated to the US with their first daughter, Emily, born in England.

The bank record cited below (see under Sources and Timeline) shows her second name as Ann.
Location of the burial record, containing her date of death and burial, confirms that the "Ann" and "Annie" shown in the two 1880 census records must be Mary Ann, and that they deliberately fudged her name and age on the census so as to make it believable that she was the mother of Bertha, rather than grandmother (see notes below and Eleanor's and Bertha's profiles for more information).

17 December 1873. Record of Eli opening a bank account at Freedman's Bank (see under Sources). It shows their address as 622 New York Avenue (unfortunately not whether NW or NE, which are two distinct addresses), his occupation as bricklayer, age as 48, complexion fair. Mary Ann "can draw" on the account and the account number is 20165. Importantly, the document also has Eli's signature, which matches that of his first marriage, to Jane Court Stanway. [Currently showing mistranscription of Mary's surname as "Lod" - reported.]

The bank has a somewhat interesting history - set up for Afro-Americans after the Civil War. Most other account holders' complexions seem to be noted as "brown" or "dark" (if at all). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedman%27s_Savings_Bank

US Census, June 1880 - two records recording Eli and "Ann(ie)", one showing daughter Bertha and the other not, Eli's age different in each. It appears that Mary Ann's name and age were deliberately recorded incorrectly in order to make it believable that they were the parents of Bertha, rather than their daughter Eleanor.
