Mary Elizabeth Rivers Huggins was the 2nd born, of (11), child of Israel Maxon and Hannah Marie Klaper Rivers. Mary Rivers Huggans/Huggins was 3 yrs old when she came to the United States with her parents in 1852 from Canada.

Family 'story' has it that Mary Elizabeth 'carried' her brother, James Rivers, on her back... across the 'prarie' from Red Vermillion Twp., Nemaha Co., KS to 'Oregon'.

David Alonzo Huggans (aka Alonzo David or Lorenzo Huggans) was born in what is now west virginia. His parents moved to Iowa around 1853.

In about 1863 David and, possibly his brother Charles, went to Idaho Terriroty in the 'gold rush'. While there he met and married 'Mary Elizabeth Rivers'. Her parents left soon after for Oregon.

Accoding to David's daughter, Rose, "He worked in the mines (gold, that is), made a lot of money but he wasn't wise enough to keep it and was broke when he and mother married." Living expenses were very expensive in the mining camps and the average miner did not get rich looking and mining for gold.

David and Mary went to Oregon in the fall after they were married. He became a farmer and also farmed for others.

Mary Elizabeth kept sheep and spun, carded, etc. her own wool and then knitted gloves, stockings and the like and sold them to neighbors and loggers. David would take her work out to the logging camps and sell them there. She also made her own family's supply of gloves and stockings.

After David died, Mary lived with her daughter, Rose Huggins (Freeman, Westerman).

David and Mary Elizabeth Rivers Huggans were the parents of:

- Maxxon Israel 'Mack' Huggins (married for a short time to ?)

- Melissa Laney Huggins Forrester, Marshall, Pierson, Hulf

- Melinda Melvira 'Lindy' Huggins Marshall

- John William Huggins m. Georgia Isabell Walker

- Lillian May Huggins Myers (my Grandmother)

- Arleta Huggins died in infancy

- Levi Huggins died at age 4

- Rose Ella Huggins Freeman Westermann
