About Mary Hutchinson

Mary was sixteen when she married the Rev.John Hutchinson who was brought up in the Church of England and although it was against the wishes of his parents turned to the Methodist Church where be believed that he could do more good belonging to that body.Mary had been born at Parramatta, where her father had been in charge of the "female factory". Although her own living conditions would have been satisfactory she would have been well aware of the female degradation which prevailed at the factory. This would have stood Mary in good stead when at a later date she was to assume a role in charge of female prisoners. Mary was educated at Mr.James Bradley's Seminary for boys and girls at Parramatta, where she made very good progress displaying a serious disposition and mental ability beyond her years. In January 1832 John Hutchinson was asked to accept the position of Superintendent of the female prison in Hobart Town and Mrs.Hutchinson (then aged twenty one) the position of Matron. The offer was accepted and they commenced duty of 4th.January 1832.

In March 1851 John Hutchinson was forced to resign as Superintendent due to his poor health and Mary was offered an alternate position in charge of the Female House of Correction in Launceston from where she retired in 1854 when transportation of convicts to Van Diemens land was discontinued.

John died in 1866 and Mary in 1880. She had supported her husband during most of his life and had borne him twelve children - Mary survived eight of her children who mostly died in infancy, which is probably an indication of the pitiful conditions under which John and Mary Hutchinson were required to work.
