About Mary Jane Jones

Mormon Pioneer Overland Travel, 1847–1868 Uriah Curtis Company (1852) Age 18

Departure: 28 June 1852 Arrival: 29 September, 1 October 1852

Company Information: About 365 individuals and 51 wagons were in the company when it began its journey from the outfitting post at Kanesville, Iowa (present day Council Bluffs).

Mary Jane Cummings was born in Gibson, Tennessee on October 20, 1834 to John and Rachel Canada Cummings. Her parents were known as Pap and Mam Cummings. She was the eldest of their ten children.

Very little is known about Mary Jane's youth. At some point her parents must have moved the family to Nauvoo. For we do know the family moved from Nauvoo in 1846 and moved again to Gallows Grove, Iowa (five miles above Kanesville). They stayed there for three years. We do know at some point her father was a bodyguard to Joseph Smith.

On June 1, 1852, she traveled west with her family by wagon train, where they braved and conquered the raw elements of nature, with the John Maxwell Company. Their particular wagon unit was lead by Captain U. Curtis. They arrived in Salt Lake Valley on October 1, 1852. They then traveled on to Provo, arriving on October 12, 1852.

She met and married Richard Jones Sr. in Provo on December 12, 1855. In the spring of 1859 they moved with 17 other families to Heber Valley. It was here they raised their seven children: five boys and two girls.

It is also interesting to note that her sister, Sarah Ann Cummings, was one of Elisha Jones' wives.

Mary Jane was a loving wife and mother. She passed away May 6, 1906 and was buried in the Heber City Cemetery on May 8, 1906.
