About Mary Ann Kelly

On the 10 Dec 1879 when Patrick James was born Mary and Alfred (36yrs) had 1 boy and 3 girls living and one girl died. They may have had other children after that. Alfred and Mary's daughters Catherine (Kate) and Emilie looked plump in a photo, and one boy had red hair which may have been Owen as Patrick James had light brown hair, according to Mary's granddaughter Noreen Mary Mc Grath (nee Kelly).

Same source Noreen Mary Mc Grath said the daughter above Catherine (her Auntie Kate) was widowed when her husband died of appendicitis during the operation. Kate was known to be strict, and was scared of frogs. One of her nephews Jack (Noreen Mary's brother) put a frog on her once for fun and to scare her off when she came to help out when his Mum, Theresa Laurel Kelly who was having a baby. Kate lived in a semi home in Bondi, Sydney. She was very kind to me ( Patricia Petersen her great niece said) when I was doing the HSC and it was noisy at home for me to study, I was able to stay with her during some of he HSC exams. She had opium poppies in her back yard, because they were such beautiful plants.
