The Keyser children's surname was changed in 1852.

"Samuel Charles Keyser(1804-187?)was born about 1804 in PA and came to Santa Rosa Co,Fl before 1830 and lived near Mary. He was in the logging with her father Benjamin Jernigan Jr.and operated a ferry from Floridatown to Ferry Pass.

In 1852 Samuel Keyser petitioned the Florida legislature to adopt Mary's four youngest children, stating that he was their father.

"According to Legislative records in Tallahassee in the 6th Session of the House of Representatives on November 22, 1852 W. W. Harrison, state representative of Santa Rosa County announced his intention to present a bill to the House, to wit:

Change of names:

Augustus W. Whitmire to Augustus W. Keyser Joseph C. Whitmire to Joseph C. Keyser Elizabeth Whitmire to Elizabeth Keyser Margaret Whitmire to Margaret Keyser"

Son Augustus William Keyser(26 Oct 1838-5 Feb 1892) are buried in Milton Cemetery, Joseph Charles(21 Sep 1838-14 Nov 1819) buried near his mother at Milton Cemetery , and sister Elizabeth J Keyser(24 Dec 1840-2 Jan 1868) is buried in Milton Cem. She never married. The other sister Margaret Virginia Keyser (31 March 1843-13 Oct 1905)married Rev. Wesley Barnwell Dennis about 1862 in Floridatown, Santa Rosa co, FL. She and husband are buried in Methodist Church Cemetery in Plantersville, Dallas Co, AL)" [Contributed by applevalleylodge]
