About Mary Cadogan

Mary had travelled across the river Dee by ferry to join her brother William and wife, to help look after their new baby. Kate Williams suggests in her biography of Emma Hamilton (England's Mistress) that Mary would have been glad to escape her mother and the duties which came with looking after her younger siblings. She was "slim, lively and fond of fun, and men competed for her attention."

Married at Grand Neston church in June 1764 after brief courtship, Mary possibly pregnant with Emma (as was common at that time), although Emma always insisted that her birthday was 26 April. True DOB is not recorded anywhere.

Henry died suddenly 2 months after Emma's baptism (on 12 May) - cause unknown and possibly a source of gossip (suicide, murder, accident or ill-health?).

Within 15 years, Mary was working for free as Emma's housekeeper, and catered to her every desire until she died.

It is not certain that Mary lived at Hawarden with her daughter through her early years. It seems likely that she had a lover connected to Broad Lane Hally (Sir John Glynne's residence), who helped to provide for Emma's health and education. After Sir John's death in 1777, Mary travelled to London.

By the time Mary moved in with Emma to act as housekeeper and chaperone at her house in Paddington Green provided by Charles Greville in 1782, Mary had adoped the surname Cadogan. Although no marriage is recorded, there was a John Cadogan living in the Paddington area in 1773 and Mary may have lived with him there.

Until her death on 14 January 1810 (date in Kate Williams' biography of Emma), Mrs Cadogan remained loyal and supportive to her daughter, her greatest defender and staunchest ally.

Williams says that she probably died in Emma's Bond Street apartment in the parish of St George's, Hanover Square, but it would have cost substantially more for her to be buried in the church there, so Emma buried her at the Paddington Green church near her old home.
