Mary Knight

Dec. 12,, 1639:: Mary is born in Watertown,, Massachusetts. She is the 1rst of 5 children born to George Bullard and Bettrice Hall,, 2 boys and 3 girls. Beatrice is her fathers’ 2nd wife. His 1rst wife,, Margaret(Spink),, died on Feb. 08,, 1639 and it would seem George has quickly re-married as Mary’s’ birth is just 10 mths after the death of Margaret. No record of this marriage to Bettrice Hall has presented itself to this time,, however it would seem to have occurred in the early spring of 1639,, possibly in Boston.
The order of Mary’s’ birth and Margaret Spinks’ death has garnered considerable conversation and the frequent re-positioning of the dates in order to try and explain them. There is no need for this. It would seem particularly clear if you let it develop before you. Mary’s’ birth is clearly indicated and hence a constant at Dec. 12,, 1639. It gets tricky with Meggretts’ death date,, in that the death record only says her death and burial took place on the 8th and the 12th. Many interpret this to be Dec. 08th,, 1639,, virtually the same time Georges’ 2nd wife is giving birth. Of course,, the death entry needs to be examined. Common sense pushes her death back to a more realistic date. I look to the entry immediately above it in the register to see it dated Feb. 05,, 1639 and the one below it being May 06th,, to conclude the entries to be in some logical,, numeric order and surmise the date to also be in Febuary,, that being the 8th. Nothing outragious,, but at the same time explains both the entry and the timing of her death. The other entries are not transcribed in this way and outline the burial date only,, lending to the curiosity of the entry.

Mar. 29,, 1652:: Mother Beatrice dies at the age of 42 yrs. old,, her father a widower for the 2nd time. Mary is just 12 yrs. old,, and her younger siblings are ages 10,, 08,, 05 and 03.

Apr. 30,, 1655:: Father George,, A53,, re-marries to the widow Mapelhead (Mary Richards). Oldest child Mary is now 16 yrs. old.

Oct. 20,, 1657:: Mary Bullard,, A 18,, marries Michael Knight,, A27,, at Woburn,, Massachusetts. They would go on to have 7 children,, 3 boys and 4 girls.

May 02,, 1672:: Father George,, A70,, re-marries for the 4th time,, the widow Jane Ellis(Lasher). (Just put this in for fun).

Oct. 20,, 1680:: Husband Michael dies in Cambridge,, Massachusetts at the age of 50 yrs. old.

Jul. 15,, 1711:: Mary lives for 31 yrs. after the death of her husband dying,, also in Cambridge,, at the age of 71 yrs. old. There is no burial information for either of them at this time.

Michael Knight, son of John Knight (1595 - 1674) of Charlestown & his wife Mary Pickering. Born about 1630 at Romsey, died after 1675 at Cambridge. Married 20 October 1657 at Woburn to Mary Bullard, born 12 February 1639/40 at Watertown. She was the daughter of George Bullard & Beatrice Hall.
