About Mary Lane
This is the profile for Mary, the first wife of William Lane of Boston, who had children there in 1652-1656 and died there in 1656.
Biography

William Lane was probably born sometime in 1620-1630, with about 1625 being a reasonable midpoint estimate. Based on William's estimated date of birth, he was probably born in England. He died after 20 May 1676 in Massachusetts Bay Colony.
William married, first, a woman named Mary. Her first name is established by the birth records of her children and her death record. It is reasonably likely that she was the Mary Lane who was the daughter of Walter Kelway of Chelmsford, England mentioned in his 1650 will.
The date and place of marriage of William and Mary, his first wife, are uncertain. Based on the birth of their first known child on January 1651/2 in Boston, they were probably married in 1650 or 1651 in either the Massachusetts Bay Colony or England. Assuming that Mary was the daughter of Walter Kelway, William and Mary were married probably married in early 1650 since Mary was Mary Lane when Walter Kelway made his will in October 1650.
William and Mary had the following children, all born in Boston:
- Samuel, b. January 23, 1651/2,[4][5] m. December 4, 1677 Sarah (Foote) Dickinson,[5] resided in Hadley, Massachusetts until 1684,[5] d. 1690 in Suffield, Connecticut[5]
- John, b. February 5, 1653/4, m. before March 1675 Mehetable ________, living in Boston in December 1675. (See discussion and sources in John's profile.)
- Mary, b. May 15, 1656[6][5]
William's first wife Mary died May 2, 1656[7] There is obviously and inconstency between the dates of Mary's death and her daughter Mary's birth. Savage stated that the dates were as recorded in Boston records, but that one of the dates must have been misrecorded, with perhaps Mary's actual date of death having been May 22 rather than May 2.[8]
Origins
Daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Walter Kelway - born 5th of 6 children.

It is reasonably plausible that Mary was the daughter of Walter Kelway of Chelmsford, Essex, England. This theory is based on Walter Kelway's October 1650 will which refers to "my three daughters in New England, namely my daughter Margaret Mountague, my daughter Melcas Snow and my daughter Mary Lane."[1] According to a statement by William S. Appleton in Water's 1901 Genealogical Gleanings in England, "According to Savage the three daughters were evidently the wives respectively of Griffin Mountague, Thomas Snow and William." It is unclear where Savage made that statement (it is not in the profile for William Lane in his Genealogical Dictionary of the First Settlers of New England[2]) or what he based it on. However, the assertion (at least as to Mary Lane) appears reasonably plausible based on (1) the fact that William Lane and his first wife Mary were probably living in Boston in 1650 and (2) the fact that Mary Kelway's date of baptism (1629) is consistent with William and Mary Lane's first child being born in January 1651/2.
concerns
These issues were resolved.
This Mary seems to be a conflation of Mary Lane and Agnes Lane. Further research is warranted.
Based on her father's date of birth, this Mary seems to be the same as Mary Lane (which suggests that this Mary is attached to the wrong William Lane). Further research is warranted.
