Mary was born c. 1772-74 in Amherst County, Virginia, and was the daughter of William and Sarah Laine.

Mary married her 3rd cousin, William Lane, July 01, 1794, in Amherst County, Virginia; marriage license names Mary's father, William Laine, the waterman, and William's father, James; record states that Mary was "of Amherst Parish"; security and witnesses were George Lain (Mary's brother), W.R. Crawford, Wm Lavender, and Wm Stratton. Afterwords, William and Mary moved to Burke County, North Carolina, as William is listed in Burke County, North Carolina records (1794 poll tax listing in Captain Thomas White's Company).
