About (Mary) Eleanor McCain

• She was Presbyterian.

• Circumstances indicate that Eleanor Nutt McCain, born ca 1733, died ca 1788. Several researchers have speculated that Hugh married Eleanor Nutt in Augusta Co, VA, where the Nutt family lived and came with the Nutt family and the band of Scotch-Irish Presbyterians from Pennsylvania who organized the Old Waxhaw Presbyterian Church on Landsford Road near the Catawba River just across the NC line in present SC (a stone marker states the church was organized in 1755 by Scotch-Irish). She is probably buried in an unmarked grave in the old Waxhaw Presbyterian Church cemetary, since the graveyard where Hugh Sr is buried was not begun until twenty years after her death. Eleanor was daughter of William Nutt.

• Eleanor was a healer and was in great demand during the war by both sides. One of the stories told concerning her was about a Tory that was very ill and that she had taken into her home to nurse and doctor him back to health. Upon his recovery he stole the mare that was used by her to visit the other sick, disabled, and injured in the area. The sickness returned and he came back to her house for treatment. She forgave him and did her best. Usually her house was treated as neutral ground, but one old Revolutionary Soldier who had heard of his prior treatment of her went to the house into the room that the man was in, oredered him to sit up and open his night shirt. He did. The soldier then drew his sword and ran it through him, killing him on the spot.
