MEMORIAL PHOTOS 0 FLOWERS 3 Thanks to Audrey Hoffman for transferring this memorial. She has done an excellent job recording the children to Mary Polly Terry Mullins. If anyone has information that they would like added to Mary Polly Terry Mullins' memorial, please contact me. This is still a work in progress, so feel free to make any corrections or suggestions. I am looking for Mary Polly Terry Mullins marriage bond to Henry Mullins. If anyone can help me locate this document, please let me know. Recent research now reveals that Mary Polly Terry had at least one sister named Rebecca Terry who married Nathaniel Dickerson and at least one brother named Oliver Terry b. abt 1758 in Orange, NC married to unknown. Her brother Oliver Terry b. abt 1758 had a son named Rheuben Terry who was heir to his father's land in Tennessee. At least two of Rheuben Terry's grandchildren were given the name of Garland - Peter Garland Terry - son of George Tucker Terry and Eliz. Norton and John Garland Terry (son of Fred Terry and Eliza Bell). Nathaniel Dickerson and Rebecca Terry Dickerson had a son named Garland Dickerson.

Mary Polly Terry's mother Elizabeth Irby Terry was likely the youngest daughter of Elizabeth Jane Garland Truhart Dickerson Overton Irby and possibly a Dr. Joshua Irby. So, obviously the Garland name was treasured in this Terry family. The Terry family connection to the Logan family first in Brunswick area of Virginia and then Augusta, VA and Lincoln, KY and Rockcastle, KY helps to establishe the Terry line (parents Olive and Elizabeth Irby Terry and grandparents James and Rebecca Dudgeon Terry). David Logan first married Martha Dudgeon, sister to Rebecca Dudgeon Terry. After Martha Dudgeon dies, David Logan then remarries Jane McKinley (her mother was Esther Caldwell) and moves to Augusta, VA. We then find many family connections in Kentucky (General Benjamin Logan was one son who knew Daniel Boone, but went his separate ways and built Logan's Fort in KY and John "Blackhead" Logan; KY Senator - first m. Sarah McCune - the McCune's were connected to the McElwees and a Margaret McElwee who m. Alexander Crawford in Pulaski, KY - and then 2nd John Logan m. Rachel McPheeters. The McPheeter family is closely connected to the Crawford family in Augusta, VA as well). It is possible that David Logan's parents were acquainted with the Caldwell and Dudgeon families in Pennsylvania before they migrated to VA and another may have known the Crawford family of Augusta, VA. There are many other family connections that now reveal who the parents and grandparents were to Mary Terry (many connections to the probable half sister and half brothers of Dr. Joshua Irby and his first wife Elizabeth Ludson, who died abt 1720 - family links to William Irby who worked with Mary Polly Terry's grandfather James Terry in Halifax, VA, Penelope Irby Parrott Hudson, Sarah Irby Worsham, Anthony Irby, and Peter Irby.)

  • Note: Of significant interest is Henry Mullins and Mary Polly Terry Mullin's residence in Wilkes, NC in 1784 (poss. earlier as Henry Mullins starts purchasing land in Wilkes by 1779) revealing that they lived close to Thomas Calloway (former vestryman of Halifax, VA listed with Mary Polly Terry's grandfather James Terry), who was friends with Daniel Boone. Thomas Calloway's brother Richard Calloway was also close friends with Daniel Boone and one of his sons married Jemima Boone; Daniel Boone's daughter. So, on some level, it is very likely that Henry Mullins and Mary Polly Terry Mullins were acquainted with Daniel Boone. We now know that a likely granddaughter to Thomas Callaway (Elizabeth Callaway), married Champness Champion (Champ) Mullins in Wilkes, NC.

Mary Polly Terry married Henry E Mullins on 6 OCT 1760 in Virginia or North Carolina, but this date is uncertain as a marriage bond has not been found. The date may have come from family bible records. The date of marriage could have also been later, as their ? first born daughter Winifred Mullins was born in 1666. It is possible that Henry and Mary Polly Terry Mullins' first five children were born in Virginia, the 6th child possibly in Caswell, NC were we find Henry Mullins on a 1777 census there (last name spelled McMullins), and then the remaining children born in Wilkes, NC. ? 9-10 known children were born. They were: 1. Winifred Mullins 1766 (Halifax before becomes Pittsylvania in 1767)–1842. She married David A Owen, they had abt 13 children. 2. Terry Mullins 1767–1830. Married Lucy Ballenger when she was just 12 years old with the approval of her father; Achilles Ballenger. They had at least 13 children. She remarried after Terry died abt. 1830. Lucy Ballenger's mother was Mildred Hudson. The Hudson line has now been connected to John Hudson, brother to Thomas Hudson b. 1702 who married Penelope Irby Parrott after her first husband Nathaniel Parrott died. Penelope Irby may have been the half sister to Mary Polly Terry's mother Elizabeth Irby Terry. 3. Rebecca "Becky" Mullins 1768–1875? or 1791 (? poss. mother to female b. abt. 1791) - poss. that Rebecca was named after Mary Polly Terry's grandmother Rebecca Dudgeon Terry. 4. Mordecai Mullins b. 1770 * *Not to be confused with Champion and Elizabeth Calloway Mullins' son Mordecai Morgan Mullins b. 1806 who married Mary Cable. It is not known when Mordecai Mullins b. 1770 died. 5. Spencer Mullins 1775–1853. He married Mary King, they had 10 known children. It is now believed that Mary King is connected to the same King family that married into the Terry family (Lavinia King was first married to Chesley King, Uncle to Mary Polly Terry. 6. Champion "Champ" Mullins (poss. born in Caswell, NC 1778)–d. 1830. He married Elizabeth Calloway, they had 8- 9 children. Elizabeth Calloway was likely the granddaughter of Thomas Calloway who was a Vestryman of Halifax, VA and close to Mary Polly Terry's grandfather James Terry. Thomas Calloway's brother was Richard Calloway, who was close friends with Daniel Boone. 7. Gardner L. Mullins 1780–1849. He married Rachel L. (Hannah) Dennis, they had 5 known children. There was a great deal of confusion as to whether they had a fifth son, but it is now known according to the 1830 census record, that their fifth son was Champ Mullins b. 1824 and who married Mary Martin. It is believed now that the grandmother to Rachel L. Dennis Mullins was Rachel L. Grant who first married Samuel Dennis b. abt 1750 in Orange, NC. This Dennis family is connected to the Dennis family of Henrico, VA. Rachel L. Grant's brother John Grant married Rebecca Anne Irby, a daughter of Peter and Elizabeth Cook Irby. Peter Irby was probably a half brother to Mary Polly Terry's mother Elizabeth Irby Terry. 8. Sarah Sally Mullins 1782–aft 1860. She married Mr. Benjamin Means. They had at least 6 children. They lived for a time in Tennessee, but by 1830 at about the time that Mary Polly Terry Mullins died, Sarah Mullins Means was in Cumberland, KY about 38 miles from Rockcastle. By 1840, Sarah Means had moved to Clinton, KY - about 85 miles from Rockcastle, KY. 9. Lois Mullins 1785 m. to Stephen Langford in 1807. It is believed that they had one son and that Lois took care of the children from his previous marriage(s). This Stephen Langford (who was considerably older than Lois) could have been the man who founded Langford's Station and assisted people who wanted to emigrate to KY in their travels. Some believe that he was killed by one of the Harpe brothers in 1798, but we find a census record for Stephen Langford in 1810 and an indenture in 1802 to the Warren brothers; Charles and Burris Warren. Other information mentions that his brother Thomas Langford was likely the one who was killed by one of the Harpe brothers in 1798. See "The Outlaws of Cave-in-Rock: historical accounts of the famous highwaymen and river pirates who operated in pioneer days"...by Otto Rother, pub. 1924. On page 73, you can find a different account of the murder of Thomas Langford and one witness was a David Irby who was perhaps related to Mary Polly Terry's mother Elizabeth Irby Terry. We also find a Ballinger family connection through Captain Joseph Ballenger who pursued the Harpe brothers in 1799. Joseph Ballenger was the son to Richard and Virginia Ballenger. Richard Ballenger was the brother to Joseph Ballenger b. 1791 in VA and was the father of Achillus Ballenger who married Millie Hudson. Their daughter Lucy married Terry Mullins, son of Henry and Mary Polly Terry Mullins. Captain Joseph Ballenger was leader of the party who pursued the Harpe brothers. He was married to Jane Logan, daughter of KY Senator John Blackhead Logan and Sarah McClure Logan. The McClure family is connected to the McElwee's and to the Crawford's of Augusta, VA and to a Margaret McElwee who married Alexander Crawford of Pulaski, KY.

  • A daughter to Champion and Elizabeth Calloway Mullins: Rebecca Mullins 1799–1875. She married Alfred Owen, they had 4 known children. Rebecca has sometimes been listed as Henry and Mary Polly Terry Mullins daughter - but death records indicate that Champion and Elizabeth Mullins were her parents. 10. Unknown female b. abt 1791 (possibly a granddaughter to Henry and Mary Polly Terry Mullins?)

It is now believed, due to the last census record of 1800 in Morgan, Wilkes, NC that the Mullins family didn't travel through the Cumberland Gap until shortly after this census record (between 1803 to 1806). This would also correspond with the marriages of at least two sons who married in 1797 and 1803 in Wilkes, NC and daughter Sarah who married in 1803. *It is possible that the eldest son Terry Mullins did emigrate early to Kentucky to prepare the homestead for his family and married his wife Lucy Ballinger in KY, as we find her father Achillus Ballenger in Gerrard, KY where he served as Sheriff of Gerrard in 1796. His wife Millie Hudson Ballinger's Hudson line has been traced back to John Hudson; brother to Thomas Hudson b. 1702 who married Penelope Irby Parrott (half sister to Elizabeth Irby b. 1727 - probable mother to Mary Polly Terry Mullins). It is possible that her son Nathaniel Parrott who m. Lucretia Martin had a grandson named Joseph Parrott who can be found on the 1810 census in Rockcastle, KY near Samuel Dennis, Henry and Terry Mullins. Henry Mullins was the son to Richard (?Thomas) Mullins and possibly his second wife; Anne Malone Clements. Henry possibly left with his father and ? stepmother at about the age of 6 from Goochland, VA with a couple of brothers for Granville, NC abt 1746-1747. Although some land records indicate that Henry Mullins was back in Virginia in the 1760's. It appears that the family was experiencing financial difficulty and Richard Mullins was on a list of insolvents along with his son Henry in 1762 and 1763 in Bedford, VA. The courts and people seeking repayment of money owed to them prob. did not know where they were. The earliest census records that I find for Henry Mullins to date is in 1777 in the Gloverston District of Caswell Co., NC. In 1784 - Wilkes, NC. Of course, we know that Henry also served in the Revolutionary War in Virginia during this time period. In 1786, Henry was back in the Gloucester District of Caswell Co., NC where I believe Mary Polly Terry's parents lived. Then in 1787, back to Wilkes Co., NC. Then in 1790 - Henry Mullins can be found in Caswell County, NC with Thomas Mullins (? father or brother). Then in 1800, Henry is back in Morgan, Wilkes, NC. We do know families that lived in these areas of North Carolina often travelled back and forth between Virginia and North Carolina, so it wouldn't be unusual for Mary Polly Terry to have also married Henry in Virginia.

Mary Polly Terry and Henry Mullins lived in Pittsylvania, VA until at least 1776, then moved to Caswell, NC in 1777 and then to Wilkes, NC abt 1779. They lived near Thomas Calloway whose brother Richard Calloway was close friends with Daniel Boone. Of course, Daniel Boone was instrumental in the creation of Boonesborough, KY. The Logan family was also connected to Daniel Boone. The Logan's can be traced back to David Logan who first married Martha Danielle Dudgeon, older sister of Rebecca Dudgeon who married James Terry; grandfather to Mary Polly Terry Mullins. There are many other links that show Mary Polly Terry was granddaughter to James and Rebecca Dudgeon Terry and daughter of Olive Terry and Elizabeth Irby. After intensive research, it is probable that Mary Polly Terry's mother Elizabeth Irby b. abt 1727 in Henrico, VA was the half sister to Elizabeth Dickerson Terry who married Benjamin Terry; brother to James Terry b. abt 1702 in King William, VA. We can find family ties and links to the Irby children of Dr. Joshua Irby and his first wife Elizabeth Ludson and to his second wife Elisabeth Jane Garland Truhart Dickerson Overton Irby. Because of the Caldwell family links to the Hayes Massacre in Lauren's, SC amonst other links to the Robert's, Adam, Smith, Simpson, Durham, Overton, Parrot, Hudson, Irby, Hudson, Callaway, Dickerson, Worsham, Stubblefield, King, Owen, Shackelford, etc., etc., it is now believed probable that Mary Polly Terry's grandmother Elisabeth Garland Irby was also the mother to Joseph H. Irby who was killed in the Hayes' Massacre in South Carolina, and who was probably a brother to Elizabeth Irby Terry - Go to: www.abbott_family.org/reports/Abbott_Halifax_Court_Orders_REPORT_01_23_2014a.pdf or google Richard Durham as rootsweb is currently down (www.wcrootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=bdurham&id=1642). Here you will find a 1774 Halifax road order mentioning Joseph Irby, Richard Dudgeon (married Mary Polly Terry - daughter to James and Rebecca Dudgeon Terry - Mary Polly Terry Mullins was likely named after her), Richard Durham (some Durhams moved to KY and are connected to the Sutton family), and Nipper Adams who has major connections to the Pigg families, Smith family, Simpson family, etc., who are thus connected to James Terry and Mary Polly Terry Mullins, his granddaughter. Nipper Adams had a son named Absalom Adams b. abt 1724 in Culpeper, VA who may have been an ancestor to Balzora Adams who married Josiah Joplin Mullins; Mary Polly Terry Mullins' gr grandson.

  • **Personal side note: My mother Mildred Crawford Horn often told me what her father William Benton Crawford relayed to her what was handed down generation to generation, that his mother's ancestors knew Daniel Boone. I was young, and guess that I was skeptical, but now, after locating the parents and great grandparents of my 5th gr grandmother Mary Polly Terry Mullins - I would have to say that the Mullins story was true. I will attempt to organize this profile on Mary Polly Terry Mullins in a more readable format in the future. Thanks - Sandra
