About Mary Florence O'Mary

On the tombstone of Andrew Jackson Poore Ingle and Rebecca C. Ingle’s daughter, Mary Florence Ingle O’Mary is visual proof that Andrew’s last name was not changed when he was a toddler or kid. It was changed in 1848 by vote of the Alabama State Legislature. This was one year before Peter Ingle died.

The Act 401 from the statutes reads:

Although Andrew Jackson Poore was the adopted son of Peter Ingle, he lived with and was raised by several of the Ingle families. Part of his life was spent with William Ingle’s family, but he was largely under the adoption of Peter Ingle and his second wife, Caty.

In 1848 Andrew Jackson Poore had his name officially legalized by the Alabama State Legislature to Andrew Jackson Ingle.

ACT 401 of the Alabama Statutes of 1848: “To establish the name of Andrew Jackson Ingle of Walker County. Sec. 1 Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the State of Alabama in General Assembly convened. That the name of Andrew Jackson Ingle of Walker County, be, and the same is hereby, permanently established by law; any law to the contrary notwithstanding. Approved, February 29, 1848” (Alabama Statutes of 1848 page. 425) This information was submitted to me by Daisy O’Mary Collins, great granddaughter of Andrew Jackson Ingle and Rebecca C. Ingle.

The Ingle family, then and until today, refuse to acknowledge Andrew Jackson Poore Ingle's affiliation other than as an adopted son with no legal claim to the Ingle family. According to Floyd H. Lawson and also James Darty, members of the Ingle family, they were told that Andy Ingle was not an Ingle. Ingle family members have related to me the story that even at his death, Peter told Andy Ingle he would not inherit any of Peter’s lands and property because he was not Peter’s son. Having seen this last will, I can verify that Peter Ingle did not leave any land, property, or possessions in his will to Andrew Jackson Ingle.
