Obituary:
Mary Jane Overton
Again our hearts are made sad by the passing away from our community of Mrs. Mary Jane Overton, who died on Oct. 3rd, 1926.
In passing away of this good mother, we feel the loss of one of our best citizens.
Mrs. Overton was born in west Tennessee, February 12, 1840, and was married to Mr. William Overton at the age of fifteen years. To this union fifteen children were born, five preceeding her to a better world. Her husband died April 22nd,1904 leaving Grandma Overton to face life's battles alone. She was converted at sixteen years of age, and united with the Missionary Baptist Church, of which she was a faithful member for over seventy years. She leaves to mourn their loss four sons and six daughters, who are as follows: Monroe of Whitesboro, Texas; Forest of Whitney, Texas; Charles of Whitney, Texas, Arthur of Fort Worth, Texas; Mrs. Sallie James of Cleburn, Texas; Mrs. Mollie Chambless of Enterprise, OK.; Mrs. Florence Scott, of Fort Worth, Texas,; Mrs. Annie Wylie, of Abernathy, Texas, Mrs. Lottie Simmons, of Blum, Texas; Mrs. Effie Hope, of Waco, Texas: also seventy-nine grandchildren, one hundred and sixty one great-grandchildren, and five great- great- grandchildren who will sadly miss the good deeds, cheering words and sunny smiles of a loving mother and grandmother.
To the bereaved ones, we would say:"Weep not, as those who have no hope, for we know if we follow the footsteps and teachings of Grandma, we soon shall be reunited, where no parting ever comes and sad good byes are never known.
There to clasp glad hands with all those who have gone on before.
There to sing God's praises through the ceasless ages of an endless Eternity."
She was laid to rest in the Prairie Valley cemetery. Rev. J.N. Wolfe conducted the funeral services, in the presence of a large concourse of friends and relatives.
-By one who loved Her.
Dear Mother thou hast left us:
Never more on earth to roam.
But we know that we shall meet you
In that bright celestial home.
If like you, we have lived for Jesus.
When our pilgrimage is over,
Then we know that we shall meet you
On that bright, and shining shore.
