About Mary Jane Rewalt

Mary Jane was born the daughter of James F & Rosanna Hinkle Magee in Wrightsville, PA. James was from Chester County & Rosanna was from York County, PA.

Mary Jane & L.L. Rewalt were married in Middleton, PA. They were the parents of Margaret J (Felix) Vidal, Mrs. James Snyder, Frank J Rewalt, James W Rewalt, & William Rewalt.

From Find-A-Grave volunteer, Dennis Brandt, "Mary Jane lived in Wrightsville, York County, Pennsylvania, during the Civil War. While her husband was off at war, Confederate forces under the command of John Brown Gordon laid siege on the town, hoping to cross the Susquehanna River on the bridge there and gain access both to Lancaster and Harrisburg. Townspeople from both Wrightsville and Columbia (across the river in Lancaster County) burned the bridge to prevent the crossing. The following morning, Mary Jane served breakfast to Brown and his staff and filled their ears with her strong opinions on the Union cause for which her husband was serving. Gordon was polite but amused and made note of it in his memoirs. The Rewalt home still stands on Route 462 in downtown Wrightsville."

From FindAGrave contributor Carol Nocella #47237658 - "The wife, Margaret, listed with him (James McGee) is his 2nd wife. The Will of this James F. McGee is online at FamilySearch.org. He died July 1873 in Wrightsville, York Co. PA. The Will mentions wife Margaret and son Francis J. and daughter Mary Jane Rewalt. In the 1850 census, Wrightsville, James F. is shown with these two children but no wife, so 1st wife must have died (or left) by then." Find a Grave

As the bridge burned back in 1863, the winds shifted and the riverfront along Wrightsville’s eastern side caught on fire. General Gordon’s men formed a bucket brigade to transfer water from the river and nearby canal to extinguish the flames in the town’s buildings, but not before flames consumed the post office, a millinery, several lumberyards and warehouses, an apartment building, and other structures. Late in the night Mary Jane Rewalt, the newlywed daughter of Wrightsville’s mayor, invited Gordon and his staff to breakfast the following morning to say thanks for saving the town from worse destruction. The above art print by B. A. Farnsler depicts Gordon as he approached Mrs. Rewalt’s father’s house along Hellam Street. Source
