"90 Years Old, She Recalls Abraham Lincoln's Campaign For Presidency; Is Tolerant"

"El Dorado's oldest mother, Mrs. Mary E. Ambrose, 90, is a most up-to-date person with tolerant views on "the modern way of living" as she calls it. Slender, of a medium height, becomingly dressed, Mrs. Ambrose gives the impression of being younger than she is.

"Mrs. Ambrose was born and raised in Freeport, Ill., moving to Fayetteville, Ark., about 50 years ago. Her husband, d. C. Ambrose, published the first daily paper in Fayetteville, the Evening News. After her husband's death in 1931 Mrs. Ambrose moved to El Dorado where she now lives with her daughter, Mrs. P. E. Schaaf, at 120 N. Bellott Street.

"RECALLS LINCOLN

"As a child, Mrs. Ambrose recalls seeing Abraham Lincoln, and hearing him speak when he was campaigning for the presidency. She has a brother, William Rhodes, 92, who was a soldier in the Civil War.

"Chief interests for Mrs. Ambrose now are the radio, her friends and reading. Before the state of her health prevented it, she used to enjoy making a garden and working among flowers.

"Mrs. Ambrose has four children, 11 grand children and four great-grandchildren. Her children are Chan Ambrose of San Angello, TX; Ed Ambrose, of Miami, Fla., Roscoe of Fayetteville, and Mrs. Schaaf.

"RECEIVES GIFTS

"Today Mrs. Ambrose received a cake, specially baked for her by the El Dorado Baking Company, flowers and candy from the News-Times Publishing Company, and a corsage from the Walton Flower Shop. Her name will be added to the names of the oldest mothers in former years, on a pair of silver candlesticks at Terry Jewelry Co. The Artcraft Studio also will take a picture of Mrs. Ambrose and present it to her."
