Biography

Mary, daughter of Thomas and Sarah (Fairbanks) Sawyer, was born in Lancaster, Massachusetts, on 30 January 1671/2.[1] Her mother died about five weeks after her birth.

"Granddaughter Mary Sawyer" is mentioned in the will of her maternal grandfather, John Fairbanks of Dedham, Massachusetts, created on 10 November 1684.[2]

She was married to Joshua Rice by 1693.

Children of Joshua and Mary (Sawyer) Rice, all born in Marlborough, Massachusetts, and recorded as sons of Joshuah and Mary Rice, were:

Samuel, born 11 February 1693.[3] Naham, born 3 September 1695.[4] Zepheniah, born 22 September 1700.[5] Andrew, born 18 January 1702/3.[6] The will of her father, Thomas Sawyer, created 15 December 1735, provided for a legacy of sixteen pounds to "my Daughter, Mary Rice, the widow & relict of Joshua Rice, Late of Marlborough Deceased." The will states "together with what she hath heretofore Received & her Hus___ said Joshua Rice dec'd & their son Andrew Rice received in Bon___ or otherwise (which is by me thought to be one hundred poundstc:) to be her full part and portion in my Estate, both Real and Personal."[7]

Mary Rice, the widow of Joshua Rice, died at the reported age of 95 in Marlborough, Massachusetts, in December 1766.[8]
