Biography

Mary was born to Edward and Jane/Jone Wilkinson Dix/Dikes in Watertown on 2 May 1639.[1]

Mary Dix married, first, Abraham Browne in Watertown on 5 Feb 1662-3.[1]

Abraham died in 1667 Mary Dix Browne then married Samuel Rice, as his second wife, on 2 Sept 1668 at Sudbury, [2]

Timing of her Death

In testimony it was revealed: “Abraham Brown late of Watertown deceased and dyed intestate and left two children viz Abraham aged abought 1 years and Lydya aged abought 4 yeares… his widdow, she so remayned abought one yeares, and then marryed to Samuel Rice and lived with him abought 7 yeares and then she & her son Abraham dyed.” (Middlesex Probate Misc.Vol.1;Pg.79)

The vital records of Marlborough give her death date as June 18, 1678. However, calculating the time from the above testimony and given Samuel Rice remarried Dec. 13, 1676 and had a son with this wife Sarah, born May 16, 1678, the death date of record must be an error. The records read "Brown - Abram, son-in-law to Samul Rice", died in Marlborough May __ 1678. (Back then, son-in-law could mean step-son, as it does here.) "Rice - Mary, w. Samuel" died in Marlborough 18 June , 1678.[3] Those entries in the "Beige Books" agree with the earlier manuscript transcriptions viewable, and the year 1678 is clearly written.[4] But Mary must have died after the birth of her last child on 10 May 1674, and well before her husband's next marriage on 13 Dec 1676. Perhaps the manuscript transcriber of the Marlborough records got the date and month right, but the year was 1675 (after the seven years of marriage referred to in the probate testimony) rather than 1678. After all, a hastily scribbled 5 can later look like an 8, and 1675, the year of King Philip's War, was no time for careful record-keeping in a frontier town like Marlborough.
