Mary Sheedy

"The Buffalo News", Buffalo, NY, 25 January 2004: Former Amherst resident Marie Sheedy, 92, of Tallahassee, Fla., died Friday (Jan. 23, 2004, at Westminster Oaks retirement community there after a lengthy illness. Services will be held Tuesday in Tallahassee. Burial will be private.

The eldest of six children, she was born Marie Mengle in Toledo, Ohio, and moved with her family to Buffalo when she was a child. She grew up in the Parkside neighborhood near Hartel Avenue, where her father, Harold, managed an S.S. Kresge store in the 1920s and 30s. She graduated from School 22 and Bennett High School. She later attended Penn Hall in Chambersburg, PA.

At age 19, she married Dr. Gordon Lamb of Earlville. He died a year later of leukemia. Sixty-four years ago, she married J. Paul Sheedy. While living in Amherst, she enjoyed golf as a member of the Brookfield Country Club. She also was an accomplished pianist and organist. She and her husband moved to Tallahassee in 1978. There she was a member of the Killearn Country Club. Mrs. Sheedy was a member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a son, Dr. J. Brian of Tallahassee; two daughters, Barbara S. Anderson of Clarence and Paula S. Wolfe of Tallahassee; a brother, Jay Mengle of Corpus Christi, Texas; a sister, Eleanor Price of Amherst; six grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.
