Notes for Mary Ruck:
Mary Ruck Smith is the half sister of Sarah Burroughs, wife of the Rev. George Burroughs who was hanged for witchcraft in Salem in August 1692. It is noted that their son William, born in September 1692, appears to be the last of the children of William and Mary Ruck Smith to have been born in Massachusetts. The "New England Marriages Prior to 1700" reports that this family moved to Newport, Rhode Island which at that time was a haven for persons from Mass., and other New England areas, seeking escape from the mayhem of the witch trials.
