Biography

Mary Snow was a daughter of William Snow and his wife, Rebecca Brown(e), who was a daughter of Mayflower passenger Peter Brown(e). Mary is the first of four daughters named in William Snow's will, suggesting that she may have been the oldest.[1] She was born in the Plymouth Colony of New England, probably in the town of Bridgewater where her father was named a Freeman in 1657. Her birth date is estimated to be about 1658, based on her parents' marriage date, the birth order implied by the sequence of names in her father's will, and the estimated date of her marriage.

Mary Snow is thought to be the Mary who married John Rickard, son of Giles Rickard. Robert Wakefield quoted Shaw's Families of the Pilgrims: Peter Brown as stating that Mary Snow "probably married John Rickard, but conclusive proof has not been discovered." Wakefield speculated that "this opinion is apparently based on the fact that Mary's sisters Hannah and Rebecca married Giles and Samuel Rickard" (brothers of John Rickard). He stated, "While possible, this assumption is not accepted by by the Mayflower Society."[2] This marriage is estimated to have been in 1676, probably in Plymouth.[3]

John Rickard and his wife Mary had eight children that lived:[4][5]

Mary (or Marcy), born 27 October 1677 in Plymouth;[6] she may be the Mary Rickard who married Jabez Eddy in 1700 and died in 1711[7] Lydia, born 12 July 1679 John, born 29 December 1681 in Plymouth[8] Joseph, born 7 February 1683 in Plymouth[9] Mercy (aka Marcy) born 14 May 1687 in Plymouth Joanna (aka Joannah) born 22 September 1691 in Plymouth Abigail (aka Abigaiel) born 22 May 1694 in Plymouth Rebeckah (aka Rebecca) born 3 January 1699 in Plymouth[10] Other than the Plymouth "Vital Records," few contemporary sources exist that discuss the lives of the Rickard and Snow families in the late 1600s. For example, many have confused the lives and families of first-cousins & homonyms, John Rickard, mixing together John Rickard Jr. who was born in 1657 and who married Mary Cooke with "Deacon John Rickard" who was born in 1652 and who married Mary Snow, subject of this profile .

Mary Snow's husband, "Deacon John Rickard," died in 1726 at age 74. She would have been about 68. Some family genealogies, but with No sources, state that she remarried to "Ephraim Tinkham" after John's death but this remains unproven. Her exact death date and location are also unproven unless further research uncovers them. It is assumed that she died after 1726 in any case and most-likely in Plymouth, Massachusetts.
