From Find a Grave:
Her father was James Starrett (1751 Md- 1849 Ga) and he used this spelling of her surname.
Note- the 1850 Census Pickens District SC has Mary Rusk age 72 born 1778 NC, the listing on Ancestry report the age as 12, error in reading, plus in the Agriculture Schedule, 17 Oct 1850 reported Mary Rusk owning 100 acres of land, which would not be legal if she was 12 years old.
Oconee County SC was established in 1868, prior to that date the area was Pickens District SC which was established in 1826 from Pendleton District SC, that covered the counties of Anderson, Pickens and Oconee of today. The area was Indian land until a treaty was signed in 1777, but the state did not start issuing land grants until about 1784.
Ancestry refuses to use Pendleton District SC, uses Pendleton, Anderson, SC instead which is incorrect. According to her location in 1850 she probably lived & died in Pickens District SC. The Old Stone Church, is located in Clemson, Pickens Co. SC where she and her husband are buried.
