In 1808, her husband, John Tyler, was elected Governor of Virginia, serving in that office until 1811.

in 1841, her son, John Tyler, became the 10th President of the United States, upon the death of his running mate, William Henry Harrison. Harrison's death made her husband, John Tyler, the first Vice President to succeed to the presidency without being elected to the office. President Harrison served but 32 days in office prior to succumbing to complications from pneumonia.
