Headwaters, as Headquarters was originally known in the 1700's, was a place noted for its locality. Indians who came from Southern Ohio used Headwaters as their meeting place after great hunting expeditions. They would follow the buffalo, which also used Headwaters as a meeting place, from Blue Licks, up Johnson Creek, through Saltwell, around Buffalo Trace and finally to Headwaters. After their hunting, camping and various other duties, the Indians would return back to Ohio and the Buffalo would resume its circle around Headwaters.

Then it happened, 1780 brought white settlers into Headwaters. As the whites came the buffalo and Indians ceased coming. James Burden was one of the first settlers to arrive (1785), Nicholas Gonce soon followed Burden (1795) to Headwaters where he settled 1200 acres of land." Others who followed still have family living on the land - the Manns, McClintocks, Kennedys, Collier, Summitts, Snapps, Conways, McKees and Kimbroughs.

"During the latter 1700's and early 1800's Headwaters began its growing period. The population increased and schools, churches and businesses sprang up. As early as 1802 a log school house was built at Brushy Fork." By 1805 there was a tanning yard, a post office in 1848, a store in 1840, 1877 a harness and saddle station, 1871 the Orient Lodge AF and AM, Distilleries (4) by 1880, general store by 1879, and a grist mill by 1880. Some time around the early 1800's the location of Headquarters was at Headquarters and Steele's Run Pike.

Oddville, KY is located in Harrison Co, a bit north and west of Headquarters on US 62 (between Maysville and Cynthiana).

Harrison Co is the neighboring county to the west of Nicholas.
